On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary (Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams) from Smalltown, USA, discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets’ former stomping grounds. To stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theater, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie now performs with a Reno casino house band called the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a high-powered plumbing magnate.

Adams will play Mary, a long time dating from Segel’s character. He shares an apartment with a new Muppet, Walter, who is sort of like the couple’s third wheel. The trio takes a trip to Los Angeles and her character’s hopes it will lead to a proposal from Segel.
“For me, I have to say the most surreal thing was, it wasn’t necessarily working with them, because you accept them so quickly as co-stars – it’s like watching and loving Jason’s work and then getting to work with him, but it’s true. Then you accept him as the character he’s playing, so that was part of it. But to see them when they’re not animated was really upsetting.”
“Well, there’s a couple like that. I can’t give too much away, but there are a couple of full-scale production numbers. That’s really tricky working with Muppets, doing the production numbers, but you also have the very heartfelt completely sincere numbers. Yeah, they’re really fun.”
